(ANSA) - ROME, JUN 15 - Environment and Energy Security Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin said Monday that he expects there to be a popular referendum by the end of the decade on the government's plan to bring nuclear energy back to Italy. "A new referendum on nuclear power? I take it for granted that there will be one in 2028 or 2029," Pichetto Fratin said on the sidelines of a conference in Turin. "It is a right guaranteed by our Constitution (for citizens to be able) to participate in decisions. "I believe it is completely natural that, in a democracy, signatures can be collected for a referendum to be held. "The key thing is that we must all strive to provide the utmost clarity, to provide all the answers, and ensure maximum transparency". Italy abandoned nuclear power following a referendum in the wake of the Chernobyl disaster but the government plans to return to atomic energy with small latest-generation reactors to reduce reliance on imports and cut greenhouse gas emissions in view of the climate crisis. A bill paving the way for Italy's return to nuclear power was approved by the Lower House earlier this month and has moved to the Senate. The government expects the legislation to get final approval before the summer recess. In this way it will be possible for the related implementing decrees to be issued by the end of the year. (ANSA) - LUXEMBOURG, JUN 15 - Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Monday that Israel must stop bombing Beirut after the United States and Iran reached an agreement to end the war in the Middle East. "We must ensure that the fighting in Lebanon stops too, that Israel no longer bombs Beirut," Tajani said on the sidelines of an EU foreign affairs council in Luxembourg. In her statement welcoming the deal reached between Washington and Tehran, Premier Giorgia Meloni said that "hostilities must also cease in Lebanon".
